the stars came out
[ Gerard can't sleep.
That's not new. He almost never sleeps. Not if he can help it. Insomnia plus terrible nightmares, he just runs until he's out of gas and sleeps wherever he lands, so to speak.
It's dark as fuck out on the deck (is it a deck? is that only ships?) after lights out, yet he's not sure he's ever seen stars so bright. One good thing about the apocalypse, sure a shit takes care of a lot of the light pollution, as long as you're not near something with constant fires.
He's got a few packs of cigarettes on him, and has been doing his best to make them last. Maybe he can find some more when they go to land -- he should probably quit, though. Not quitting tonight. He lights up one as he leans against the railing, looking out at the dark line of the ocean where it meets the horizon and the stars above. Quiet and watchful as ever. ]
