a heavy hitter and a silent killer
[ Thane wasn't quite used to not being cooped up in a room with his only view of the outside world being through reinforced glass. And the "outside view" was just more white walls and scientists. Needless to say, this has so far been an adjustment.
He decides to take advantage, which is why he's standing outside, along the walkways, taking in the ocean air as if he were breathing in air from the heavens themselves. The humid air is harsh on his lungs, and reminds him of the tests they would run on him that ultimately led to his breathing troubles, but it's also a reminder that he's alive, unlike the others.
He's almost as still as a statue, webbed hands folded behind his back, shoulders squared, eyes surveying the horizon as if he were watching out for something.]

Today, however, he's just practicing his swinging, tightening up his form. Is it really that important, given that baseball is essentially (depressingly) dead? Yes. Yes, it is. And if anyone asks, it's totally helpful in combat. And really, it is. Sure, his previous martial arts training might be somewhat helpful, but when you're fighting monsters that bite and tear and sometimes spit weird fluids at you, a bat to the skull with the force of a professional athlete is far more preferable.]
And the crowd goes wild! [ He puts his hand over his eyes, as if watching a ball soar high in the sky.] Another home run for The Titans!
[ Being answered with nothing but the wind and sound of the ocean is starting to get depressing, but fortunately, he's eventually blessed with a really loud meow. He's pretty sure that was a yawn, but he's going to pretend it's a cheer as he smiles goofily at his cat lounging nearby.]
...Thanks, Puar.

All of this must be pretty crazy after all. Scott had told him all about the craziness of finding Thane. Or Reyes and Gerard finding Thane. Still, it sounded insane, but considering Cooper... this just seemed normal for Medivance. Clearing his throat a little to announce himself, Simon wanders up to stand nearby, looking out at the water too.]
It's a looooot of water.
[Good opener. Simon glances at him, brows knitting a little.]
... you okay? I'm sure all of this is a lot.

He attention remains on the horizon, and for a moment it seems as if he's just not going to say anything.]
The sky and the ocean are bigger than I thought they'd be. The books I've read, the paintings I've seen - the pictures. They do them little justice.
[ In other words; he's totally okay. At least, that's what he's trying to convey. He's not really practiced with conversation - not with anyone other than Eli, at least. The man was always insistent that only he engages in extensive conversations with Thane, lest he "pick up bad habits". This rule, of course, was not always adhered to. ]

But at the same time, he wouldn't be insulted if Thane wanted him to piss off. Yet he does reply, eventually.]
It really is something. You should see it when it's storming.
[Simon moves to lean against the railing, looking out into the calm sea that surrounds them currently.]
Sometimes it feels like the ocean will swallow the entire rig up. It gets bad enough that things shake when the waves hit the supports.
[Wow, Simon. So uh, comforting.]
no subject
Like Medivance, he thinks.
He thinks he will prefer the storms, though. ]
Sounds exhilarating. I would very much like to experience one for myself.
no subject
The storm or all the unpleasant shaking around that makes us feel like a goldfish in a bowl?
[It probably does sound pretty interesting to someone who spent god knows how many years basically in a person sized fish tank.]
... so what else have you always wanted to experience? Must be a lot. "Everything" is cheating.

[ Though, he recognizes the unsettling nature of your home shaking violently in the middle of the ocean. He's sure, for everyone else, they'd rather not have to deal with that.
Thane finally tears his gaze from the vast waters and brings his attention to Simon. He blinks two sets of eyelids, considering the question. There's so much...so much he read about, so much he heard discussed among the scientists, doctors, the security - so much he read about alone. So many things that are now long gone, and likely will never return considering the state of disrepair the world has fallen into. ]
Snow, [ he says simply, and for a moment it seems that he'll leave it at that before he continues. ] I always thought it sounded mysterious - magical, even. A blanket covering the earth, gleaming in the sun and moonlight, quiet and peaceful in a world that always sounded so...chaotic.
It's difficult to believe such a thing could exist.
[ He pauses. ]
Of course, I've been told such weather would be detrimental to my health, being cold-blooded.
[ A guy can dream. Which is pretty much all he does. ]

It's hard to not stare at Thane, but he's honestly so interesting to look at. He's beautiful in an alien way, Simon could study him for hours if allowed, but that felt wrong to even think about.]
Pft- you and lactose intolerant people would get on swimmingly.
[People when consuming dairy is detrimental to their health and yet they eat cheese because they can't give it up.]
So... you've never seen it at all? I mean like, in pictures or videos?
no subject
Pictures, yes, but they don't seem to do justice to what I've read in books. And I had very little exposure to videos that weren't some form of Medivance approved training instruction.
[ He learned a lot about the workings of human anatomy so that he could effectively destroy it. ]

[While doing their welcome aboard check up on him Thane had explained some things, Simon gathered those were part of the whole breeding test tube assassins or whatever. Absolutely insane, but so much of what they kept learning about Medivance and the shit they had been doing tended to be.
Simon thinks for a moment, tapping at the railing.]
... so I can't make it snow for you, but I could still show you some?
[Simon motions with his head towards accommodations.]
We've got a bunch of old VHS tapes, someone who used to work here recorded this Nature doc that's set in Alaska. Snow every where. Wanna see?
no subject
I would very much like that, yes.
[ There's a gratefulness underlining his rigidly polite cadence. He wasn't sure what he was expecting, coming to the surface, being surrounded by humans. He's pleasantly surprised to find acceptance, even a willingness to help him adapt. To show him things. ]
no subject
Then follow me- has anyone given you a tour yet or they just letting you figure things out as you go?
[The rig isn't small, even if a large majority of it isn't used by most living on it. Simon walks as they talk, leading him into the hallways of accommodations. Past rooms that were starting to fill up now more and more. It felt like a small town building up.]
This is where all the fun happens.
[Simon waves with a dramatic flair at the door of the lounge, of course before pushing it open. He motions to stuff as he points them out.]
We've got a bar. A couple pool tables, though we're missing a couple balls and are down to three pool cues. That's the record player, you play music on it with flat disks, pretty cool actually, but don't tell Harrow I said that.
[And then they come to the little cozy set up with the couches, chairs and TV. The bookcase with boardgames and VHS tapes barely contained, in fact there is a small pile of movies near the TV itself. Their collection is becoming a bit much.]
This box here can show you moving pictures, uh, movies and stuff. I don't know what they used in that place... probably more fancy than this old thing.
[Simon pats it like it's an old car or something, before moving to poke through the collection of VHS tapes.]
Might take a second, get comfy if you want-

Even the guards and employees who wandered too near to his enclosure had similar reactions to his appearance. And, judging by all the books he's read, he knew he was a strange sight even before he surfaced. ]
Pardon, [ he starts, his dulcet voice seeming to echo with itself due to his strange vocals. He shifts his gaze to the other, hoping eye contact might make him appear a little more approachable.
His eyes blink in two different sets, like a lizard. ] I hadn't meant to cause alarm.

Really, Jaskier startles again a second time at the movement and the voice - this is really happening someone didn't just drag back some questionable art okay.
He holds up a hand in the universal gesture of 'give me a minute', slings his guitar over his head by the atrap to free up both hands so he can uncap the flask and take a long drink from it.
Okay. Exhale. Flask re-capped, Jaskier makes a move to shove it into a pocket before he pats down his hips and remembers these pants do not have any. Right. Nevermind then. ]
Perfectly alright, apologies for the language. I take it you're one of the new arrivals?
no subject
Thane waits patiently for Jaskier to gather himself, studying the other as he does so. He only ever had contact with scientists and doctors, sometimes security, and that of his own kind - though that was...unpleasant. He can't help but watch the denizens of the rig, take stock of their differences, their similarities. It's fascinating to him, though he tries to remember that his stares likely make them uncomfortable. ]
No apologies needed. [ Mostly because he still isn't completely sure on how human swears work. There seems to be an infinite amount of combinations with "christ", for example. Books rarely explain them. They're just there. Hard to be offended by it. ] Your take would be correct. They call me Thane.
[ He turns to face Jaskier fully, bowing deep at the hip. ]
A pleasure.
no subject
Thane, a pleasure. I go by Jaskier. Not that that matters much anymore.
[ He sighs. Dramatically. ]
no subject
Thane gives a tilt of his head. ]
Why wouldn't it? [ he asks curiously. ] One would think it matters now, more than ever.
[ To keep hold of your identity, that is. ]
no subject
[ But Jaskier seems amused by that, a small smile on his face. ]
I used to be quite famous, and nobody here knows who I am is all. I didn't think fame had gone to my head but I suppose I was incorrect.
[ He takes another drink from the flask before holding it out to Thane in offering. ]
